The 12 apostles are the 12 constellations and Jesus, the constellation of Orion at spring. As the son of god, who is the summer solstice or Bootes. He sits in the middle, six each side, but they are grouped in sets of 3, 3 months per season. The void on the left of Jesus represents the milky way in the authors view. 4 table posts for the 4 seasons. 4 evangelist as mentioned earlier. Two heads on the table representing the summer and winter solstice respectively. Why, because Leonardo da Vinci used the universal symbolism of the 3 doors. These have a special meaning. It represents the position of the sun on the horizon over the season, were the left door is the winter solstice, the middle door the spring/autumn equinox the right door the summer solstice.
One apostle, John, is pointing upwards as a further clue that the answers are up. Leonardo knew very well what the Jesus story was about and what he was painting in an age of church oppression against heretics.
